What job/study are you doing right now and tell us a little about it?
I am currently working towards a Masters in Genetics at The University of Manchester. I am researching the possible connection between the evolution of hormones, such as the pleasure hormone oxytocin, and the behaviour of mammals. I want to discover if there is a connection between variations in the hormone and monogamous, committed relationships.
Did you do any further/higher education?
After school I attended Carmel College and studied Maths, Biology and Performance studies. After completing college, I attended The University of Manchester to persue a degree in Genetics.
How did you decide on your career path and what is/was most interesting about your work?
For me, college and university was very well suited to what I wanted to do at the time. I enjoy studying and found something I enjoy so ran with it. The most interesting part of what I do is being able to conduct individual research that has not yet been done by anyone else!
Can you share a couple of fond memories of your time at St Cuthbert's?
Whilst at school I particularly enjoyed being part of the musicals and plays put on annually. I also really enjoyed my final year. That year was so massive for everyone in year 11 at the time and I feel as though I made some real friends for life - friends I'm still in touch with today.
Did you have a favourite/influential teacher? What made them so important to you?
The most important teacher in my school career was Miss Anderson, my drama teacher. I knew, even from when I started in year 7, that she would ensure I reached my full potential and she wouldn't let me settle for second best. She really helped me to build my confidence through my school years and that has definitely helped me to progress to where I am today.
What advice would you give our current students?
The one piece of advice I would give current students is to appreciate every moment and to take every opportunity presented to them. Also, make strong friendships, you'll be surprised how many of those people you will miss once you leave!
